Unit 14 Task 2

Debra is a 64-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s
Disease, her husband had been her only support, but he recently passed away and
her only daughter lives in another country, so Debra has no family support close by
for her Parkinson’s. She works as a banker for the past 40 years, recently she had
been having troubles at work doing certain tasks due to her tremor. She has been
experiencing uncomfortable joint pain that becomes worse if she does to much
moving around or different activities, Debra feels like she becomes upset easier
since her joint pain became worse.

14/D.P5 Assess care needs of a selected service user with a physiological
disorder.

Parkinson’s Disease is a condition that affects the brain meaning parts of it gradually
become damaged over many years. Parkinson’s has many different symptoms
however there are 3 main ones that should be looked for when an individual is
worried of developing Parkinsons., the three main symptoms are: tremor of a certain
body type such as the hand, slow movement, stiff and inflexible muscles. There is of
course other symptoms that an Individual could experience due to Parkinson’s, such
as depression, memory problems and many more (NHS, NHS, 2021). Parkinson’s is
quite common in English, it is thought that around 1 in 500 people are affected by
Parkinson’s disease, Debra was one of them.

Since Debra got diagnosed with Parkinson’s she had been struggling to comfortably
live by herself because her certain needs are affecting her to be able to be more
independent than before. Debra’s mental health has been affected since her
Parkinson’s developed further. Depression is part of Parkinson’s Disease’s because
of the chemical changes that are happening in the brain (Foundation, 2022). Debra
is more likely to feel anxious about her future due to her Parkinson’s as she doesn’t
have any family support since her husbands passing, meaning that she would be
worried on how to do certain tasks, furthermore she most likely knows that her
memory will start to become worse along with her mobility which could cause her
mental health to decline further down because she is scared and anxious about
becoming more dependent on others and slowly forgetting her memory.

Another care need that would affect Debra is her joint pain, the mot common one is
Musculoskeletal Pain which is the one that Debra deals with the most (UK P. , PAIN,
2022). This kind of pain brings ache to any part of her body which affects her
movements of the joints, her everyday tasks are affected due to the joint pain
meaning she would be unable to sometimes do her house chores or do her job at
work at appropriate timing which could cause her to fall behind her job and that could
severely stress her out and she could become more frustrated about the pain, and
ones again would feel like she has to rely on others more due to her Parkinson’s.

Another care need that would affect Debra is mobility. As her Parkinson’s develops
further, she will start lose her automatic movements, for example she may struggle

, to walk or keep her balance. Furthermore, it will become more difficult for her to do
too many tasks at the same time, even two tasks could be too difficult to do, easy
actions such as turning could become a challenge in it self that could cause falling if
not careful. Her movements would become either smaller or slower which means
that everyday living could become a challenge for her if she doesn’t get any kind of
support (foundation, 2022).

Altogether Parkinson’s will affect Debra not only physically and mentally it will also
affect her previous environment that she is used to where was able to be
independent as much as she wanted to. Having all these different care needs would
most definitely affect her self-image that she had of herself and she would also most
likely lose her confidence due to having to rely on others and knowing that
Parkinson’s will affect her further as it develops over the years, which as mentioned
before will make her more anxious about the future, especially as she doesn’t have
anyone to lean on during the difficult times.

14/D.P6 Plan treatment to meet the needs of a selected service user with a
physiological disorder.
All care needs are required by professionals to be met so the service user gets the
best quality of care for their condition, and they have less worries about it. It is
important that for Debra her care needs are given a treatment or support to make it
easier for her not only because she has Parkinson’s disease but also because she
has no one to rely on when it comes to friends or relative which means she would be
dealing with everything by herself until it is decided she needs further support such
as carers.

Debra's mental health and worries are exacerbated by the fact that she has no family
support to lean on as a result of her husband's death; even though she has a
daughter with whom she can speak on the phone, this would not be enough for
Debra to be fully supported. After an assessment of how Debra is coping with
Parkinson's on her own, counselling could be provided for her. During counselling,
she could be given tips and advice on what to do to improve her quality of life, which
could help her to build her life around Parkinson's to ensure she isn't feeling
overwhelmed and stressed about her day-to-day life. (webmd, 2020). Though
counselling would be the primary treatment for Debra's mental health, if it is
determined that it is not improving, additional assessments may be performed to
determine whether she requires medication, such as antidepressants.

Debra's joint pain would most likely be treated with medication to alleviate her
discomfort. The most common medication prescribed to a person with Parkinson's
pain is a dopamine agonist called Levodopa, which is used the most because it
treats movement symptoms, which are the source of all pain (PF, 2020). However,
administering levodopa medication too early during Parkinson's disease may prevent
the medication from being effective, and medication is an invasive way of treating
something. So, if medication is not prescribed right away, another solution, such as a
joint brace or wrap, could be recommended to relieve pain by removing pressure
