Wat zijn micro organismen ?
Bacteriën, virussen, gisten en schimmels zijn micro-organismen. Dit zijn levende
organismen die zo klein zijn dat ze niet met het blote oog te zien zijn. Net als
virussen en eencellige parasieten. Micro-organismen kunnen overal leven.



Virus
Een virus is een heel klein micro organisme (kleiner dan een bacterie) dat zich niet
zelfstandig kan voortplanten. Het wordt verspreid via de lucht, via voedsel of
aanraking. Om zich te vermeerderen heeft het een levende gastheer nodig:
lichaamscellen van mensen en dieren. Virussen nestelen zich het eerst in onze
slijmvliezen, waar de luchtwegen en het maagdarmstelsel vrijwel geheel mee zijn
bekleed. Het virus maakt misbruik van de mogelijkheid van lichaamscellen om
zichzelf te kopiëren. Binnen een dag is een virus gemakkelijk in staat om miljoenen
kopieën van zichzelf te maken. Als je bijvoorbeeld besmet bent met een
verkoudheidsvirus, ben je meestal binnen twee dagen verkouden.
