Rehabilitation program
This rehabilitation program is for a 16-year-old female hurdler how has suffered a sprained
ankle. In this program my aim is to restore sporting function that she had prior to getting
injured and ensure physiologically she is functioning to the level before the injury or even
better.
First stage of rehabilitation is the acute stage, this is from when the injury occurs to around 4
days after. In this our aim is to manage the inflamed ankle and reduce the pain, the
treatments we will use is rest ice compression, elevation and kinesiotaping (which is the
taping of .the injury to provide support too the injury)
Second stage of rehabilitation is the sub-acute stage (repairing stage) in this stage we will try
encourage full range of motion and also optimal loading and weight bearing on the ankle,
treatment methods we will use ice and heat Aswell as exercising non injured body parts the
exercises we will do in this stage will be passive stretching of around the joint to improve
ankle flexibility
Third stage of rehabilitation is the early rehabilitation stage. At this stage we will be hoping
to achieve full weight bearing and start to improve strength in the injured ankle and begin to
implement Proprioceptive/Balance Training. I will help activate the muscles and gain back
the mind muscle control lost in the injured leg due to the ankle sprain.
Fourth stage of rehabilitation is the late rehabilitation stage. In this stage we hope to
develop muscular power endurance and multidirectional movement, to achieve this we will
start doing isokinetic exercises as well as increasing the load and having more intense
cardiovascular exercises as well as implementing exercises that are specific to the athlete.
Fifth stage of rehabilitation is the functional stage in this stage we will be introducing
sports specific functionality as well as monitoring the demands of competition e.g. intensity
and frequency of sports specific movements we will do this by doing high intensity and
unpredictable movements e.g. diagonal cutting drills and sprinting and a combination of
movement drills.
Week 1 of rehabilitation plan: in the first week of the rehabilitation, we will focus on
RICE (rest ice compression and elevation) rest as much as possible and elevate where
possible use ice and compression when able too. The exercises to do is ankle sits on the
injured leg to do this you need to lift the uninjured foot off the ground off the floor and
slowly rotate the ankle in both directions while making circles with your toes and by doing
