Newspaper - Newspaper was the first method of presenting news to people dating back to the 17th
century although back then because of the printing costs political parties where helping support the
newspaper companies so long as they aided their parties and policies in their print and because of
this papers began printing party propaganda and messages, even publicly attacking political leaders.
In 1930 the linotype machine was invented which was used to mass-produce newspapers this made
it a lot cheaper for the printing. It was also at this point that the pamphlet format was replaced with
what you see today. Muckraking was also introduced at this point; muckraking is the writing and
publishing of news coverage that exposes corrupt business and government practices. This practice
is still very much used today.
With newspapers they are typically in different categories to cater for different people for example
tabloid that focuses on less serious content such as sports and celeb gossip and broadsheet that
focuses on more serious issues such as politics and major news stories.
In the recent years the newspaper business is going downhill mainly because of the internet. This is
because most people nowadays look for news via their mobile phones and computers as this is a
much more efficient way of receiving news as it takes only a matter of minutes for the whole world
to know about it whereas with newspaper people only know about the news stories once its been
published and then printed.
Radio – Radio came about properly in the 1920s with sponsored news programs and radio dramas.
It was mostly important during the war times as it was a way of everyone getting an update of the
current situation whilst at home. Its also potentially a way for people who are unable to read to be
able to have access to news. Nowadays people only really use the radio to listen to music usually in
a vehicle or for sports updates. Its also worth mentioning that there is an error with radio when it
comes to certain rural areas as receiving a signal can be an issue.
Television - Even more than radio, television allows politicians to reach out and connect with
citizens and voters in deeper ways. Before television, few voters were able to see a president or
candidate speak or answer questions in an interview. Now everyone can decode body language and
tone to decide whether candidates or politicians are sincere. Presidents can directly convey their
anger, sorrow, or optimism during addresses.
Television brings a lot of money to loads of different companies through advertising and the adverts
you see are usually based upon the station/show you are currently watching.
Its one of the best ways to present news to the public because most households have a television and
its not that expensive to buy one and for the first time people could see footage from the news story
they are watching which adds that element of emotion that is one of the most important aspects of
drawing people in that you couldn't do as well via the radio or a newspaper. For major news stories
it is also a very good way of finding out live information as media companies will all be down there
reporting the matter as its happening for everyone to watch live.
