The orderly, monumental, elevated temenos
(sacred enclosure) served as the ritual and
administrative cen- ter. It contrasts with the
densely packed, more organic form of the
residential quarters around it.

ter- rifying;" Axial and symmetrical staircases; a
temple or god's "bridal chamber" at the
summit. The Mudbrick core was faced with
baked brick; the temple was plas- tered and
painted. The annual ritual marriage of the
high priest and priestess, representing the
patron de- ity Nanna and his consort Ningal,
assured the fertility of the land.

Narrow streets follow the boundaries of dense
hous- ing blocks, suggesting the street
system was not
pre-planned. Houses share party walls to reduce
expo- sure to heat and sun. Minimal public
space.

Constructed with a sloping timber roof to direct
rain- fall into the courtyard for collection. A
wealthy family would have lived here, as
indicated by the two floors and the use of
timber, which was an imported material. The
courtyard provided shelter from the sun and
light to the interior rooms.
