At the end of this lecture/week the students
would be able to:
Describe the concept of total and effective
stresses, pore pressure and excess pore pressure.
Understand the concept of friction model, soil
shear strength, Mohr-Coulomb failure theory and
shear strength parameters of soil.
Define the procedure and determine the shear
strength parameters for the shear box test (CD –
consolidated drained test)
Explain the stress-strain relationships

strength parameters for the triaxial test (UU–
unconsolidated undrained test, CU–consolidated
undrained test, and CD–consolidated drained test)
and unconfined compression test (UCT)

based on effective and total stress analysis.
