❑ Determine axial force (thrust), shear force
and bending moment for parabolic and
semi – circular arches.
, INTRODUCTION
➢ A curved structure that are used to reduce the bending
moments in long span structures such as bridges.
➢ An arch acts as an inverted cable where it receives its
load mainly in compression.
➢ The arch carries most of the load axially with bending
moment greatly reduced due to the curvature of the arch.
➢ Advantages
❑ Bending moment in arch rib has been reduced by the
action of the horizontal thrust at the abutments
