In the Module Eight Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview, Scenario, and Prompt sections.
Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this
template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.
Applying Piaget’s concept of perspective-taking in ways that would support Jasmine, address the
following in your response:
o Why is perspective-taking so critical to your conversation with Jasmine?
o How might you seeing Jasmine’s situation from her point of view inspire her to advocate
for herself?
Piaget’s theory of perspective taking is critical to the conversation with Jasmine in that it is
important to not only be able to see other perspectives as a support system, but also to
illuminate to the person receiving support that there are many perspectives involved in this
situation. While it would appear that Jasmine is receiving unfair treatment there may be factors
in James’ perspective that she does not know about, such as his education or the experience he
had prior to this job. Overall, it is important as Jasmine’s support system to see the situation
from her perspective, but it is equally important for Jasmine to see outside of her own
perspective. I would empower Jasmine to advocate for herself by recommending that since she
knows there may be other perspectives involved here it would benefit her to request a meeting
with her manager to discuss the situation.
Applying Goleman’s concept of empathy in ways that would support Jasmine, address the
following in your response:
o Why is empathy so critical to your conversation with Jasmine?
o In Jasmine’s case, what do you believe is the main difference between perspective-
taking and empathy?
Empathy is critical to supporting Jasmine to meet her and acknowledge her concerns. Her
emotions would need to be understood and accepted. The difference between perspective-
taking and empathy is our perspectives can be skewed, as we are placing ourselves in another’s
shoes, but as ourselves. Empathy is pushing ourselves out of our minds and into another’s, truly
attempting to see their situation as they would. Empathy requires more of an emotional
connect.
Applying Gilligan’s views on morality in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following
in your response:
o Why is moral reasoning so critical to your conversation with Jasmine?
o According to Gilligan, which type of morality best aligns with Jasmine’s situation: care-
based morality, justice-based morality, or both? Explain your response.
Since Jasmine is a woman, according to Gilligan’s views she would take this situation more
personally than men. In Jasmine’s mind she is putting herself in her boss’ shoes (perspective-
taking) and acknowledging that she would never make a judgement call this unfair due to her
morals. This situation would align with justice-based morality as pay inequality is a social justice
hot button topic.
