A1. Quality initiatives
Fielder Medical Center implemented the initiative to rescue patients with severe sepsis and septic
shock, conditions that result in organ failure and mortality. In collaboration with the medical
staff, the center developed best practice ‘bundles’ in 2013. Since their implementation in 2014,
the initiative has demonstrated significant success, with collected data showing a reduction in
mortality rates associated with severe sepsis and septic shock. Fielder Medical Center has
demonstrated commitment to improving patient outcomes and effectively preventing severe
sepsis cases.
A collaborative team effort by the medical staff at Fielder Medical Center introduced an initiative
for a comprehensive program to prevent Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract infections (CAUTI).
Catheters used in the post-surgery period may cause infections in the bladder or kidney if germs
travel along the device. To prevent infections, Fielder Medical Center staff ensures adherence to
, sterile techniques during catheter placement and advocates for alternatives to urinary catheters.
Thanks to these efforts, the facility has seen a decrease in catheter-associated urinary tract
infections, contributing to a safer healthcare environment for its patients.
At Fielder Medical Center, cardiac care leaders have successfully reduced rates of Surgical Site
Infections (SSI) in their cardiac patients since 2008 through their initiative of a comprehensive
program. The program focuses on preventing surgical site infections by identifying all potential
sources of infections. These safe practices promote a collaborative culture by bringing all staff to
address any safety concerns and deliver a higher level of care.
