Health Promotion: Obesity Among Teens And
Kids
Back in our parent’s period, there were not as many fast food chains. But as time goes on,
more and more fast-food restaurants are being built and put into place. Along with different fast
food chains, many gyms are being opened and memberships are at a better price. Teens are new
to exercising and have no idea how to prioritize eating healthy or going to the gym. What
happens when people don’t prioritize healthy eating habits and work out? Obesity happens. A
person who is obese is diagnosed based on their BMI ( body mass index) about that person’s
height and weight. According to Healthy People 2030, 17.8 percent of children and adolescents
aged 2 to 19 years had obesity in 2013-16. Also according to this article, about 13.7 in the US are
obese(Healthline, 2016).
Why Are Teens Obese?
A lot more people ( in particular adolescents) are starting to become obese because they
lack physical activity and a healthy diet. According to the University of Georgia, 75 percent of
teenagers are not getting enough daily exercise, that is a lot of teens. As a teenager, you are still
influenced by your parents and by your peers( Lauren Bagget, 2022). High school has an
enormous number of different sports to choose from. Teenagers should be getting most of their
activity in school and of course outside of school. Many of them tend to be constantly on the go
and that’s where fast food comes into play. Research has shown that the rise in fast food is the
reason Americans’ BMI rises, andAmericanscans are notorious for fast food. According to the
CDC, a report showed that young people received 13.8% of their daily calorie intake from fast
food(Kaelan Deese, 2020).
