1.Introduction to Astronomy
Definition: Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies like stars, planets,
comets, and galaxies, as well as the phenomena that originate outside
Earth’s atmosphere.
Branches of Astronomy:
Astrophysics: Study of physical properties of celestial bodies.
Planetary Science: Study of planets, moons, and planetary systems.
Cosmology: Study of the universe as a whole, including its origin,
evolution, and eventual fate.
2. The Solar System
Components: The Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and the
Kuiper Belt.
Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune.
Moons: Examples include Earth’s Moon, Jupiter’s Ganymede, Saturn’s
Titan.
Orbits: The planets orbit the Sun due to gravity in elliptical paths as
described by Kepler’s laws.
3. The Sun and Stars
The Sun:
Structure: Core, Radiative Zone, Convective Zone, Photosphere,
Chromosphere, and Corona.
Fusion Process: Hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium, releasing
energy (nuclear fusion).
Other Stars:
