The Indolence of the Filipinos
(A Reflection Paper)
“Indolence in the Philippines is a chronic malady, but not hereditary one. The
Filipinos have not always been what they are…”-Jose Rizal
The Indolence in the Filipinos is a written essay by Jose Rizal that talks
about the slothful attitude of the Filipinos during the Spanish colonization. One of
the contents of his work describe indolence as an illness, it could be worsen or
be cured. Nevertheless, it can’t be pass over to your offspring. It is a decision of
a person if he will be passive or not. Regarding with it, the Filipinos were too
sluggish to work during the Spanish colonization. Yet, before the Spaniards
came in the Philippines, they were hardworking and very productive. In the
written essay of Rizal, he enumerates several points what are the cause and
effects of the Spaniard to the Filipinos life in becoming unproductive in economic
activities.
Rizal points out the cutting off of all connections of the Philippines in other
countries of Asia and Middle East which brought up to Spain as the only country
that conducted a business and trading to the Philippines. As a result, some of
the small businesses and other sole industries were dissolved due to low
demand. Second, Filipinos were turned into nomads because of the foreign
invaders keeps on bring up chaos and Spaniards are not compiling to their duty
to our country. Due to that, the Filipinos weren’t able to build their own business
or they have no permanent source of income. However, some are forced to work
in shipyards, farmlands managed by Spaniards and other business industries.
Third, the Filipinos were not taught with essential learning. Instead of teaching
courses such as agriculture and livelihood, they taught more in philosophical
aspects and repetitive prayers that were not essential on the lives of the
Filipinos. They also make the naive Flipinos believe that it is better to die poor so
you could easily enter the heaven after they died. Lastly, Spaniards promotes
, gambling and siestas (not literally, means taking a break from work) . Instead of
working, some will take a bet wishing they will win huge amount of money while
some taking siestas by following women.
All of the direct points from the essay were the truth. In addition, due to the
lack of unity of the Filipinos, they weren’t able to fight for their rights and they
end up no choice which it to follow the set rules of the cruel and inhumane
society which led by the Spaniards. Filipinos where supposed to be industrious
and hardworking yet we end up on being deprived and; used as a foolish dog to
our own country because of being naive and vulnerable.
It is a lesson of us that we should not let the colonizers influence us into
wrong pathway. Because at the end of everything that have done wrongly, we
are the only one who will suffer.
