The Role of Skeletal Remains in Bioarchaeological Research

The study of human remains has long been a cornerstone of archaeological and anthropological research, providing a unique window into the lives of past individuals and communities. Bioarchaeology, a subfield of archaeology, combines the analysis of human skeletal remains with archaeological and historical data to reconstruct the biological and cultural lives of past populations. This study focuses on the ancient Egyptian site of Tell el-Amarna, a short-lived but significant settlement in the Nile Valley. Founded by Pharaoh Akhenaten in the 14th century BCE, Tell el-Amarna was the capital of Egypt for a brief period, during which time the pharaoh introduced radical changes to Egyptian society, including the introduction of monotheistic worship and a new artistic style. The skeletal remains of individuals buried at Tell el-Amarna offer a unique opportunity to explore the lives of ordinary Egyptians during this period of significant cultural and social change. This study aims to reconstruct the biological and cultural profiles of these individuals, examining their diet, health, mobility, and social organization. Through the analysis of human skeletal remains and archaeological context, this study seeks to contribute to our understanding of ancient Egyptian society, shedding light on the daily lives of individuals living during this pivotal moment in Egyptian history.
