, CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The intent is to ensure students awareness about on disaster
preparedness and school safety. Disaster preparedness is an area of study in
public health that instructs the public on how to prepare for disasters,
both man-made and natural (University of California, Merced, 2023). School
Safety has been defined as creating safe environment for children, starting
from their homes to their schools and back. This includes safety from any
kind of abuse, violence, psycho-social issue, disaster: natural and manmade,
fire, transportation ( vikaspedia, 2023).
In Philippines, it ranks among the top three countries in the world for
population exposure and vulnerability to hazards. The Philippine government
has developed strong coping mechanisms over their long history of experience
with disasters. Yet, significant gaps remain in disaster management
capacities across different regions of the Philippines and surprisingly
little data are available referencing local levels of disaster resilience
and preparedness. Comprehensive overview of the school measures of resilience
and levels of disaster preparedness of the students. It comes at a time of
critical importance as efforts are being made to ensure disaster management.
Improving students’ knowledge and skills to prepare for disasters can play
a major role in children’s health. School as a place to teach children can
make a significant contribution to provide the necessary skills. This study
aims to identify the effects, strengths and weaknesses of interventions in
schools to prepare children for disasters (Seddighi, 2020).
, The researchers observe that, most of the schools do not have fire
hydrant and fire hose, as well as smoke alarms and emergency vehicle. The
earthquake drill is the leading executed disaster program while fire drill
is the least performed disaster preparedness program by the school and by
the local government. The insufficiency of safety facilities can lead to
vulnerability of the schools towards disasters thus it makes the school an
unsafe place for all the learners and teachers. Executing preparedness is
considered as an activity developed by concerned stakeholders to preempt or
respond to and making immediate recovery from an emergent calamity and
hazards.
This study aims to assess the awareness of potential disasters and their
preparedness to respond to them. The findings can inform the development of
educational programs that enhance students' knowledge and skills related to
disaster preparedness. Well-prepared students can contribute to the overall
resilience of their communities in the face of disasters. Research can guide
policymakers and school administrators in creating effective disaster
preparedness policies and plans. Understanding students' awareness can lead
to actions that reduce risks and mitigate the impact of disasters. The
research can also raise awareness among parents and the broader community
about the importance of disaster preparedness in schools It empowers the
younger generation to be proactive in disaster readiness, which is valuable
for their future and the sustainability of their communities. Having data on
students' awareness can assist emergency responders in better planning for
disaster response. Overall, this research can have a significant impact on
the safety and well-being of students and the communities in which they live.
