process to recycle the PET
(polyethene terephthalate)
INTRO
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a thermoplastic polymer risen and belong to the polyester
family. This material has been a non-recycle able material for a long period, but ITENE
research center has formed a new biological and chemical way to recycle PET in a very
efficient way. To increase the efficiency of the re-cycling of PET an enzyme based
depolymerization process is created.
IMPACT ON OUR COUNTRY (PAKISTAN)
Pakistan generates 3.9 million tons of PET annually, it is used widely as a plastic, especially as
bottle, food packaging and textile. there is no suitable method in Pakistan to use for recycling
this material and there is no government body or an organization taking responsibility for
recycling it, due to it is not recycled and most of it is dumped very improperly and because of
this inaccuracy this causes clogged drains, urban flooding, and soil degradation. it is also
dumped in the Arabian sea and because it’s non-biodegrade able so it becomes a major
threat for sea animal and all other aquatic life living in the Arabian sea.
PET can also convert into micro plastics and this is a major threat to the food chain of both
Animal and Human causing a dangerous disease of food poisoning. PET takes hundred of year
to decompose moreover it causes landfill overflow and cause environmental damage
Positive impacts of PET
PET is a very beneficial plastic, many small and medium sized business are now adapting to
PET based packaging PET is very cheap and light so it’s transportation and packaging which is
more affordable, it is also used in beverage and textile industry PET is the main raw material
for Polyester fiber which is used in clothing and carpets etc. PET has a long shelf so they
preserve more reducing the wastage of food and water. Producing PET require less energy
emits fewer greenhouse gasses
