The narrator thought that he was praying
Reason: He knew that his face was not too good for a
photograph
Photographer’s Statement About His Face and His Reaction
Photographer said that the face was quite wrong
o To which the narrator replied that he had always known
that
Photographer then suggested that the face would be
better three-quarters full
Narrator agreed; he was glad to see that the
photographer had a human side to him. He reflected, as
he would afterward, and continued saying that:

morose, and excited, but the moment they are
