B. Needs Assessment:
As a community health nurse, it is essential to be able to assess the community and population.
Doing so help determine the needs and assets of the community. During this task, the nurse
engages in a virtual simulated city, Sentinel City, and gathers information on health needs and
risks in the given community. There were four tools used to help collect data and information
needed to assess Sentinel City. The tools include a Demographics Assessment, a Neighborhood
and Community Safety Inventory, the Windshield Survey, and finally a Population Health
scavenger hunt.
Demographic Assessment
Sentinel City has a population of 663,862, which includes four different neighborhoods,
Industrial Heights, Casper Park, Acer Tech, and Nightingale Square (Sentinel City, 2020). The
median household income of the city is $49,091, and the percentage of residents living below the
poverty level is 18.9%. Industrial Heights has the lowest population at 38,855 people, along with
the lowest median household income of $24,672. Industrial Heights also has the highest
percentage of non-insured residents at 37.5% (Sentinel City, 2020). The neighborhood with the
highest population is the Casper Park District at 352,643. Their median household income is
$80,134, and their percentage of non-insured residents is 22.7% (Sentinel City, 2020).
Nightingale Square has a population of 103,974 but has the highest median household income of
$269,550. Their percentage of non-insured residents is only 0.7%, that being the lowest of the
four neighborhoods (Sentinel City, 2020). Acer Tech Center’s population is 168,390, with
median household income of $166,300. Their percentage of non-insured residents is 1.5%
(Sentinel City, 2020).
The age breakdown for Sentinel City is 10.5% ages 65 years and over. Persons under the age of
18 years old is 21.7%, and 7.4% of people are under the age of five (Sentinel City, 2020). The
