The War on Drugs
Have you ever thought what immigration can do to the youth of our
American children? Throughout my research I have found that immigration has a
big role in the use of drugs and the process of getting drugs into the united states.
I have found that this really has not been a short time coming problem but has
been happening since 1973. The United States has been trying to stop the
smuggling of drugs and have tried to stop the violence that comes with drug use.
Because the war on drugs affects all aspects of our economy and our everyday
lives. Cartels will singlehandedly target young adults, and the war on drugs causes
danger to the American people.
The War on Drugs started in the early '70s. Former President Richard
Nixon declared drug abuse to be a "public enemy number one" in June of 1971.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (D.E.A.) was created and implemented in
1973. The war on drugs started as a small fraction of the federal law enforcement
attention. It quickly gained popularity in 1981, when President Ronald Reagan
dove into the war on drugs. Not only did he find the war on drugs extremely
pressing so did his wife. First lady Reagan started a campaign called "just say no"
to educate and teach youth on the dangers of using drugs. In 1986, U.S. Congress
passed the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986. From the mid-'80s, the war on drugs
, was almost quiet due to a mandatory minimum sentence which was made for
various drug offenses. The '80s were filled with marijuana, crack, and cocaine.
