RBT Definitions
Continuous reinforcement - answer Provide reinforcement for every occurrence of the
target behavior
Intermittent reinforcement - answer Provide reinforcement for some, but not all
occurrences of the behavior.
Ex: Fixed Ratio, variable ratio, fixed interval, ratio interval.
Negative reinforcement - answer Occurs when a behavior is followed immediately by
the removal of a stimulus that increase the future frequency of the behavior in similar
conditions.
Anything that you REMOVE from the environment to increase the probability of that
behavior happening again in the future.
Intermittent schedules of reinforcement - answerA rule specifying the environmental
arrangements and response requirements for reinforcement; a description of a
contingency of reinforcement.
Fixed Interval - FI - answerReinforces the first response after a fixed amount of time.
Fixed Ratio- FR - answerReinforces the first response after the Completion of a
constant number of responses
Variable Interval- VI - answerReinforces the first response after a changing amount of
time.
Variable Ratio- VR - answerCompleting a changing number of responses.
Token Economy - answerA system of behavior modification based on the systematic
reinforcement of target behavior.
Reinforcer - answerOccurs when a stimulus change immediately follows a response
and increase the future frequency of that type of behavior in similar conditions.
Positive Reinforcement - answerOccurs when a behavior is followed immediately by the
presentation of a stimulus that increases the future of the behavior in similar conditions.
Anything that you ADD to the environment to increase probability of that behavior
happening again in the future.
, Positive reinforcement should be paired with verbal praise; this natural reinforcer mimics
what will be presented in school.
Unconditioned reinforcement - answerA stimulus change that increases the future
frequency of a behavior WITHOUT prior pairing with any other reinforcement.
Something we do not have to learn to enjoy.
Ex: food, water, sleep.
Conditioned reinforcement - answerWhen a previously neutral stimulus acquires the
ability to function as a reinforcer through stimulus-stimulus pairing with one or more
unconditioned or conditioned reinforcers.
Ex: praise paired with money, tokens, coupons.
Extinction - answerA behavior that was previously reinforced no longer results in the
reinforcement, thereby decreasing or eliminating negative behaviors.
Extinction burst - answerThe behavior which was previously reinforced might increase
in frequency, duration and/or intensity before there is a decrease.
Novel behavior - answerA behavior that the person would not have engaged in before
while engaging in the target behavior. These behaviors can be aggressive or more
emotional.
Spontaneous recovery - answerTendency for the behavior to occur again in situations
that are like those in which is occurred before extinction. If there is no reinforcement the
behavior will not last long.
Differential reinforcement - answerReinforcing a behavior in the presence of one
stimulus while not reinforcing in the presence of another stimulus. Combines extinction
and reinforcement into one procedure.
Differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) - answerReinforcement is
delivered for a behavior that serves as a desirable alternative to the behavior targeted
for reduction and withheld following instances of problem behavior.
Differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI) - answerReinforcement is
delivered for a behavior that is incompatible with he behavior targeted for reduction and
withheld following problem behavior.
Shaping - answerDifferential reinforcement of successive approximations of a target
behavior until the person exhibits the target behavior.
