A Brief History of the Swedish Language
Swedish is a North Germanic language, closely related to Danish and Norwegian. It evolved
from Old Norse, the language spoken by the Vikings over 1,000 years ago.
Key Periods in Swedish Language History:
1. Old Norse (800–1100 AD) – The Viking Age language, shared by all of Scandinavia.
2. Old Swedish (1100–1500 AD) – After Sweden became a kingdom, Latin and German
influenced the language.
3. Modern Swedish (1500–Present) – With the printing press and the Bible translation
(1541), Swedish became standardized.
Today, Swedish is spoken by around 10 million people, mainly in Sweden and parts of
Finland. It remains an important Scandinavian language with a rich history!
The Swedish Alphabet
Swedish uses the same 26 letters as English, plus three additional letters: Å, Ä, and Ö. These
extra letters are very important, as they change the meaning of words.
