Integers
Integers are whole numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero. They do not include
fractions or decimals. The symbol “Z” means the set of the integers given.
- Example: Z={−3,−2,−1,0,1,2,3}
- Positive Integers=1,2,3
- Negative Integers=-1,-2,-3
- Zero (neither positive or negative)=0
- Absolute value: |(number)|
- The number can be either positive or negative.
- You don’t have to look at the positive or negative sign to find out the value; just look at
the number.
- Example: |-5|
- The value will be 5.
- Example: |5|
- The value will be 5.
Rules for Adding Integers:
Signs of Integers Operation to Use Answer Sign Example
Addition Positive (+) 4+3=7
Addition Negative (-) (-5)+(-3)=-8
Subtraction Use the sign of the 6+(-2)=4
integer with a bigger
absolute value.
Subtraction Use the sign of the (-9)+(4)=-5
integer with a bigger
absolute value.
