This parade turned violent after the West Mounted Police charged the crowd. During this event, one man was killed and 30 were injured. Chanak Affair In 1922, the Turkish Government threatens to occupy Chanak, a neutral zone. Britain turns to the Dominion for help. Canada refuses to "be called" agrees to help only if it is moved properly through Canadian Parliament. If Canada ever goes to war to Britain,it means to pass through Parliament. It show the Canadian and Britain interests are growing apart. The impact is Canada's first step in taking control of its own foreign affairs. Halibut Treaty The US and Canada came to an agreement to close Halibut fishing season. Canada took into its own hand to sign a treaty with US. In 1923, there was an imperial conference, it allowed all Dominions were given more power to sign own treaties. Canada could now sign the treaty with foreign nations on its own. King / Byng Crisis Mackenzie King wanted to call an election, 9 months after last election. Governor General Byng refuses saying it wasn't in the interest of the people. Mackenzie King used this hypocrisy as his platform in 1926 in the election. King stepped down the election. The Governor General is now a representive og the Queen. It's a slow decline of their power Statute of Westminster Declared that Dominions are self-governing and independent. Canada was no longer a Dominion of Britain but rather a voluntary member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Canada no longer needs to ask permission through Governor General
