Assessment: Research, Writing and Referencing Assignment
(50%)
Due date: Friday 16 April, 4pm (week 7)
Weight: 50% of your final mark
Length: 6 pages (not including research process
description and bibliography)
Submission: Turnitin via the subject Moodle site
INSTRUCTIONS
The task scenario and questions start on page 4. The assignment is designed to assess
your research and analysis skills, abilities to write clearly and persuasively, and to
reference correctly and in accordance with the AGLC. It is not designed to assess your
learning in a particular area of substantive law.
In addition to the other assessment criteria, a pass in this assessment requires students
to meet a basic minimum standard of acceptable referencing practice. Students who do
not meet this standard will be required to re-submit the assignment with proper
acknowledgement of sources. See further information under ‘re-submission
requirement’ (page 3).
All pages should be in black type, with 2.54 cm margins on all sides (left, right, top,
bottom). The font size must be 12 point using the ‘Times’ font, with footnotes and
indented quotations in size 10. Line spacing must be ‘double spaced’. Pages must be
numbered. Please see ‘Format of Work’ on page 3 of the School of Law General
Advice guide for further information.

, The assessment task will be checked by Turnitin, a tool for checking if it has
unreferenced content. You can submit your assessment task to Turnitin prior to the
due date and Turnitin will give you an originality report. You can then make any
changes that may be required and re-submit your final version by the due date.
This is an individual assignment and must be entirely your own work.
Appendix: RESEARCH PROCESS
Provide a brief description of your research process for this assignment, including
research databases accessed and your search strategies. This should demonstrate your
developing skills in the research tools taught in the subject, in relation to both primary
and secondary sources.
The format for the research process description is:
- No longer than half a page;
- Times font, size 10;
- Single spaced;
- Placed after your answers to parts (i), (ii) and (iii), and before your
bibliography.
The research process description is not included in the page limit for the assignment.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
1. Effective research and use of primary sources.
2. Effective research and use of secondary sources.
3. Developing skills in writing clearly, concisely and persuasively, with a
cohesive structure.
4. Appropriate referencing that upholds academic integrity and complies with the
AGLC.
5. Conformity with page length and formatting.
