Captain Crozier Analyzed
Captain Crozier was in command of USS Theodore Roosevelt warship. He sent a memo to Navy
leaders about the covid-19 cases on his ship.
, In my analysis I will go over the outcomes, how it might of played out in the private sector, and
lessons learned.
Ethical Problem:
Captain Crozier is trying to follow CDC and Navy guidelines. CDC’s recommended prevention
is as follows: Avoid close contact with people who are sick, physical distancing should be at
least 1 meter (3 ft); and clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. The
Department of Defense recommends as follows: Re- emphasize avoiding contact with sick
people and implement quarantine. Crozier is stating what is recommended from CDC and
Secretary of Defense guidelines. Captain Crozier went on to say why he sent a memo.
“ Captain Crozier with more than 100 sailors infected with coronavirus pleaded. Monday March
30th 2020 with U.S. Navy officials for resources to allow isolation of his entire crew and avoid
possible deaths in a situation he described as quickly deteriorating.” (Captain of aircraft carrier
with growing coronavirus outbreak pleads for help from navy)
The memo went over the problem and solution that Crozier believed would help the situation.
Crozier’s Ethical Decision
Crozier felt it was unnecessary to lose sailors when there was no war going on.
“This will require a political solution, but it is the right thing to do.” (Captain of aircraft carrier
with growing coronavirus outbreak pleads for help from navy)
Criticism on Ethical Judgment
Captain Crozier took a risk on his job by sending the memo to the navy leaders.
“I expect you to do your jobs and that’s what I expect every officer on this ship to do, is to do
your jobs.” Modly stated. (Transcript: Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly addresses USS
Theodore Roosevelt crew about stupid ousted captain)
Crozier made a choice to try to save his sailors even with backlash.
Ethical Choice in Leadership
Modly visits Theodore Roosevelt personally and curses Crozier for his actions.
“ That if he didn’t think that information was going to get out into the public, in this information
age that we live in, then he was A, too naïve or too stupid to be the commanding officer of a ship
