Introduction to Postpartum Care.
Postpartum care, also known as the puerperium, refers to the period from the delivery of the
placenta until the mother’s body returns to its pre-pregnancy state. This period typically lasts six
weeks and requires careful monitoring to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother
and the newborn.
Objectives of Postpartum Care
● Monitor maternal recovery and detect complications
● Provide emotional and psychological support
● Promote breastfeeding and newborn care
● Educate the mother on family planning and self-care
Phases of the Postpartum Period
1. Immediate Postpartum (First 24 Hours)
● Monitoring vital signs and uterine involution
● Assessing for postpartum hemorrhage
● Initiating breastfeeding
● Observing mother-infant bonding
2. Early Postpartum (First Week)
● Continued monitoring for infections, pain, and emotional changes
● Education on perineal and breast care
● Assessing for postpartum depression
3. Late Postpartum (Up to 6 Weeks)
