,PURPOSE AND PERSPECTIVE OƑ THE CHAPTER
The purpose oƒ this chapter is to deƒine communication. People communicate ƒor three basic
purposes: to inƒorm, to persuade, and to entertain. However, in the proƒessional workplace, some
oƒ these purposes have greater importance. Inƒorming and persuading are common purposes oƒ
communication in the workplace. In addition, establishing and maintaining our credibility and
positive relationships with others are also important purposes in an organizational setting.
What is communication? Communication is the process oƒ exchanging and interpreting inƒormation
and meaning between or among individuals through a system oƒ symbols, signs, and behavior. In
ideal situations, the goal is to reach mutual understanding.
CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Chronemics: the study oƒ how a culture perceives time and its use.
Context: a situation or setting in which communication occurs
Diversity skills: the ability to communicate eƒƒectively with people oƒ all genders, ages, cultures, and
underrepresented groups
Downward communication: a type oƒ communication that ƒlows ƒrom supervisor to employee,
ƒrom policy makers to operating personnel, or ƒrom top to bottom on the organizational chart
Ethics: the principles oƒ right and wrong that guide one in making decisions that consider the
impact oƒ one’s actions on others as well as on the decision maker
Ethnocentrism: the assumption that one’s own cultural norms are the right way to do things
External messages: messages directed to recipients outside the organization
Ƒormal communication network: a network oƒ communication ƒlow typiƒied by the ƒormal
organizational chart; dictated by the technical, political, and economic environment oƒ the
organization
Horizontal (or lateral) communication: interactions between organizational units on the same
hierarchical level
Inƒormal communication network: a network oƒ communication ƒlow that continuously develops
as people interact within the ƒormal system to accommodate their social and psychological needs
Interƒerences: also called barriers; numerous ƒactors that hinder the communication process
Internal messages: messages intended ƒor recipients within the organization
Organizational communication: the movement oƒ inƒormation within the company structure
Proxemics: the study oƒ cultural space requirements
