Chronic Disease Prevention and Control
Being sick with the same condition for an extended period of time, a year or more can
lead to one being diagnosed with a chronic disease. Chronic diseases can include many things
such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory diseases, and diabetes (Owen, 2023). Most of
the time these illnesses require ongoing medical attention and further impede on a person’s daily
living. Chronic diseases tend to not have a cure and sometimes lead to premature death or
disability. According to Erwin, in just the United States alone nearly half of the adults are living
with at least one chronic condition, and unfortunately, a quarter have two or more conditions.
There are a multitude of options that a patient can take to prevent the ultimate demise of death or
disability.
A person can help benefit one's own health by taking initiative early on in life. Since
many chronic diseases are caused by risky behaviors such as tobacco use, poor nutrition,
physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use, these should be avoided at all costs and done early
on in life (About Chronic Diseases, 2022). Education is a very important opportunity for
improvement in overall long-term health.
Importance of Resolving
Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of chronic diseases. Cardiovascular diseases
and conditions include many aspects: the build-up of plaque in the artery walls (coronary artery
, disease), heart rhythm disturbance (arrhythmia), abnormality of a heart condition at birth
(congenital heart disease), and high blood pressure (hypertension) (Owen, 2023). High blood
pressure is very common, nearly one in two people have the condition (Health and Economic
Benefits of High Blood Pressure Interventions, 2022). If a patient has excessive high blood
pressure it can lead to dangerous and serious issues like a heart attack or a stroke. Educating
