SELF-EFFICACY 2
Investigating the Correlation between Self-esteem and Self-efficacy
Self-esteem and self-efficacy for learning and performance have permeated the study
of psychology, especially concerning adolescents in their educational endeavours.
Self-esteem pertains to the degree to which an individual praises or merits themselves (Lane
et al., 2004), while self-efficacy refers to an individual’s assurance or confidence in their
abilities towards fulfilling a task (Bandura, 1994). One such study investigated the correlation
between self-esteem and self-efficacy and thereafter suggests, based on the high correlation
that the two are substitute measures for the same fundamental construct (Judge et al., 2002).
This study further investigates the relationship between self-esteem and self-efficacy for
learning and performance and strengthens the hypothesis that there exists a positive
association between the two human concepts. Furthermore, Talsma et al. (2018) suggest an
association between self-efficacy and academic performance, which further accentuates the
relevance of such concepts in refining the educational endeavours of adolescents.
In addition, Zuckerman et al. (2016) also propose that males have a slight advantage
over women pertaining to self-esteem. Henceforth, this study will also examine the variation
in self-esteem that arises as a result of gender. Based on differing societal roles and
expectations of genders, we hypothesise that a difference in self-esteem between males and
females will arise.
Methods
Participants
The sample consisted of four hundred students (326 females; 74 males) from the Vrije
Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. The participants ranged from 17 to 56 years of age (M = 20.8,
SD = 4.90). A range of study programs was pursued, with the majority (79%) studying
Psychology. 11.8% study Pedagogy, 5.8% study pre-Masters, and 3.5% study PA-kwadraat.
