- Basic unit of life
- All organisms are composed of cells
- All living things are made up of cells
- New cells arise only from preexisting cell
- bounded by a selectively permeable membrane
B. EUKARYOTIC CELL
Greek = true nucleus
Contain a well-define nucleus sorrounded by a nucler
membrane.
Can be single called such us yeast and paramecium, or
such us multicellular such as animals and plants.
Cytoskeleton= protein fibers that maintain cell shape
Have membrane –bound nucleus and organelle
Endomembrane System; endoplasmic riticulum, golgi
aparatus and lysosome
Energy-RelatedOrganelles; mitochondria & chloroplast
THE CELL’S PARTS
1. The plasma membrane
2. The cytoplasm
3. The nucleus
A. THE PLASMA MEMBRANE (SKIN):
A. PROKARYOTIC CELL
- Greek = before the nucleus - Cell Membrane
- Single celled organism - The plasma membrane (also called plasmalemma)
- Bacteria and Cyanobacteria forms the outer boundary of the cell
- No nucleus - Semi-permeable
- DNA is not separated from other components - It is the outer protective layer of cell. It isolates cell
- Lack a membrane-bound nucleus from neighbouring environment.
- Smaller than eukaryotic cells - Composed of proteins (structural; proteins)
- Have a single chromosome, semifluid - A selective barrier that allows sufficient passage of
- Cytoplasm, and thousands of ribosomes oxygen, nutrients, and waste to service the volume of
every cell
- The general structure of a biological membrane is a
double layer of phospholipids
