Health Promotion Amongst Hypertension Patients
As community health nurses, we see a large variety of patients. Our goal is to identify at
risk individuals, their habits, and help them live in the healthiest way possible. Today we will
discuss health promotion amongst these at risk groups. One of the most common diseases that we
diagnose and treat in healthcare today is hypertension. Hypertension is a global health crisis that
can have a huge impact on overall cardiac health and can lead to serious if not deadly strokes.
For this reason, it’s very important for us as health care providers to connect with individuals
that are at risk for this disease and offer help and suggestions on how to prevent or function at
the highest level with their illness.
At Risk Groups
, An article in Vascular Health and Risk Management brings out that hypertension can
have subtle if any symptoms at onset, which can cause a delayed diagnosis. This epidemic is the
cause of over 50% of stroke deaths and 45% of cardiovascular deaths from ischemic disease.
This article brings out that the majority of patients suffering from hypertension have been found
to be in low and middle income class, smokers, people with poor diets, sedentary lifestyles, those
under high stress, abdominal fat, and diabetics (Gorbani et al., 2020). Of course, hypertension
can affect those who do not fall into these categories and some individuals can have a genetic
predisposition to this. But for the purpose of this discussion, we will focus on the risk factors that
can be modified in order to prevent or live with this disease in the best way possible. We will
concentrate the rest of our discussion on those with diabetes as this is a major risk factor in
hypertension and development of poor outcomes.
