Concept of Development
Development is a process that creates growth, progress, positive change in
economic, environmental, social and demographic component without damaging the
resources of the environment.

“Development as a tool enabling people to reach the highest level of their ability,
through granting freedom of action, i.e., freedom of economic, social and family
actions, etc.”

Amartya Sen developed the capability approach to emphasis the term development.
Capability approach became a basis for the measurement of development by the HDI
(Human Development Index), which was developed by the UN Development
Program (UNDP) in 1990.

Types of Development
Development can be categorized into several types, each addressing different
dimensions of progress:
 Economic Development: This type of development focuses on improving a
nation’s economic indicators, such as GDP growth, income distribution,
employment opportunities, and trade. It aims to create sustainable economic
growth and alleviate poverty.
 Human Development: Human development emphasizes enhancing people’s
well-being by improving their education, health care, and overall quality of
life. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a commonly used metric to
measure this type of development.
 Social Development: Social development aims to create an inclusive and
equitable society by addressing issues such as gender equality, social justice,
and access to basic services like clean water, sanitation, and education.
 Political Development: Political development focuses on creating stable and
participatory political systems that ensure the protection of human rights, rule
of law, and effective governance.
