CE3016 Ground Improvement Techniques

,
Ground improvement techniques are methods used to enhance the engineering properties of soil, making it more suitable for construction. These techniques are often employed when the natural ground is too weak or unstable to support structures. Here are the main categories and common methods: --- 1. Mechanical Methods Compaction: Increases soil density by reducing air voids. Methods: Dynamic compaction Vibro-compaction Rolling and tamping Preloading and Surcharge: Applies temporary loads to compress soft soils before construction. Stone Columns: Crushed stone is inserted into the ground to improve load-bearing capacity and drainage. --- 2. Hydraulic Methods Dewatering: Removes groundwater to stabilize soil. Vertical Drains (Wick Drains): Installed to accelerate consolidation of soft, saturated clays during preloading. --- 3. Chemical Methods Grouting: Injecting cementitious or chemical materials into soil to increase strength and reduce permeability. Types: Permeation grouting Jet grouting Compaction grouting Soil Stabilization: Mixing additives like lime, cement, or fly ash into soil to improve strength and durability. --- 4. Reinforcement Techniques Geosynthetics: Use of geotextiles, geogrids, and geomembranes for soil reinforcement, separation, and drainage. Soil Nailing: Inserting steel rods into slopes or excavations to provide stability. Micropiles: Small-diameter piles drilled and grouted to carry structural loads. --- 5. Thermal Methods Ground Freezing: Temporarily freezes soil using refrigerants to provide support during excavation or tunneling. --- 6. Biological Methods (Emerging) Microbial-Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP): Uses bacteria to precipitate calcite and bind soil particles. ---
