SUCCESS
ABCs Should concentrate on abnormalities that might be an immediate risk to the life of the
patient
Stabilize without delay
Ensures vital life systems
A-is the airway patent Pull tongue forward, make sure airway open, remove debris if needed
B-is the patient trying to breath? If breathing is it effective? if not, endotracheal tube ASAP
are they gasping, labored, increased lung sounds, etc
Listen to both lungs!
If breathing but having difficulty give oxygen
C- what is the circulatory status? MM, CRT, pulse, heart rate
listen to heart while palpating pulse to make sure pulsing @ same time
Priority is given to treating level of unconsciousness
Respiratory
Cardiac
Vascular problems
, Other systems are then evaluated in a systematic manner- crash plan
If unconscious Extend head and neck
Assess the airway for patency- watch respiratory pattern
Once level of consciousness has been evaluated Assess the airway-listen to lungs
Circulation assessed-CRT, pulse deficit
Thorax and abdomen percussed
Arterial bleeding is a serious priority Uncommon problem- don't make it to clinic fast
enough
Apply direct pressure immediately
Vessel can be clamped
Tourniquet applied
Neuro exam Brain injury
Spinal cord injury
Neuro problems present with Seizures
Altered mentation
Acute paralysis
