BIOD152 Module 7 Exam Practice Questions with Alternative Questions

Question 1

True or False: The kidneys are long, thin muscular tubes.

False

**CAN ALSO ASK:

True or False: The bladder drains into the ureters.

False

Note: It drains into the urethra. The Ureters flow into the bladder.

**CAN ALSO ASK:

True or False: The ureters drain urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

True

Question 2

A person sustained blunt force trauma to the back at the T5 level, with no spinal cord injury. Would
you suspect the kidneys to be damaged? Why or why not?

I would not suspect that the kidneys would be damaged because they lie between the levels T-
12 and L3, and are protected by the ribcage.

If asked to describe the shape, weight and location of the adult kidney. Note: An adult kidney is bean-
shaped, about the size of a can of soup and weighs about 5 ounces. The right kidney is slightly lower
than the left because of the liver’s location just above it.

**CAN ALSO ASK:

A person sustained blunt force trauma to the back at the L1 level, with no spinal cord injury. Would
you suspect the kidneys to be damaged? Why or why not?

Yes, I would suspect damage because the kidney lies between the levels T12 and L3.

**CAN ALSO ASK:

A person sustained blunt force trauma to the back at the T3 level, with no spinal cord injury. would
you suspect the kidneys to be damaged?

I would not suspect that the kidneys would be damaged because they lie between the levels T-
12 and L3, and are protected by the ribcage.

Question 3

Describe the consistency and purpose of the renal capsule.

The renal capsule is an inner layer of protective tissue and tough fibrous outer skin of the kidney
which helps to protect it from injury and infection.

,**CAN ALSO ASK:

Describe the consistency and purpose of the renal adipose capsule. Note: Adipose means fatty

The renal adipose capsule is a fatty layer outside of the renal capsule that protects the kidney
from trauma.

**CAN ALSO ASK:

Describe the consistency and purpose of the renal fascia.

The renal fascia is the outer layer which is a dense fibrous connective tissue that helps to keep
the kidney in place inside the abdominal cavity.

Question 4

Name the layer and discuss the purpose of its extensions in the region highlighted in blue, below.

This layer is called the calyces which is an extension of the renal pelvis. It serves the purpose of
collecting urine which drains continuously into the renal pelvis and then into the ureter. The ureter will
in turn transport urine to the bladder for storage.

Note: A vertical cross section of the kidney reveals three distinct regions: the cortex, medulla, and pelvis
(Figure 7.3 in Mod 7.1).

The outer renal cortex, just inside the renal capsule, is a continuous outer region with several
projections (cortical columns) that extend down between the renal medulla pyramids. Located within
the cortex are the glomerular capsule and the distal and proximal convoluted tubule sections of the
nephrons along with associated blood vessels.

Deeper within the kidney lies the renal medulla, which is divided into sections called pyramids that
point toward the center of the kidney. Located within the medulla are the Loop of Henle and the
collecting duct sections of the nephrons along with associated blood vessels.

, The centermost section of the kidney near the renal hilus is the renal pelvis, which constitutes a funnel-
shaped tube that connects to the ureter as it leaves the hilus. Several extensions of the pelvis
called calyces collect urine, which drains continuously into the renal pelvis and subsequently into the
ureter. The ureter then transports the urine to the bladder to be stored.

**CAN ALSO ASK:

Name the layer and the parts of the nephrons located in the region highlighted in green/blue, below.

This is the outer renal cortex. The parts of the nephrons that are located within the cortex are the
glomerular capsule and the distal and proximal convoluted tubule sections of the nephrons along with
associated blood vessels. It also consists of the cortical columns that project down between the renal
medulla pyramids.
