-SCHIZOPHRENIA, SCHIZOPHRENIFORM, BRIEF PSYCHOSIS, AND SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDERS
, ● Schizophrenia: two or more symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech,
disorganized or catatonic behavior, negative symptoms) present for six or more months
● Schizophreniform: identical to schizophrenia except symptoms are present for over one
month but less than six months
● Brief psychosis: symptoms present over one day but less than one month
● Schizoaffective: schizophrenia behaviors with a mood disorder (e.g. depression or mania)
-MUST KNOW: SCHIZOPHRENIA
● Age onset of symptoms: late adolescence to early adulthood (late 20s to early 30’s)
● Neurotransmitters: increased dopamine, increased serotonin, dysregulated glutamate
1.) Schizophrenia: too much dopamine in mesolimbic (positive symptoms) )and mesocortical
(negative symptoms) regions of the brain
-PHASES OF SCHIZOPHRENIA
● Premorbid phase: the individual has no symptoms of schizophrenia but may have
characteristics that are associated with the development of schizophrenia
ex.) a child who is shy, withdrawn, poor social interactions
● Prodromal phase: symptoms specific to schizophrenia begin to emerge and functioning begins to
deteriorate
● Active psychotic phase: symptoms of psychosis are prominent
● Residual phase: symptoms of the acute phase are absent; however, negative symptoms
may remain
