(Jawaharlal Nehru, from The Discovery
of India)
SUMMARY
India needs to evolve—cut off the outdated, stagnant parts of her past while preserving the vital
wisdom and cultural richness. Clinging to dead traditions restricts growth. Nehru emphasizes the
need to move forward by absorbing global knowledge and participating in the modern human
adventure.
Truth, while eternal, must be reinterpreted over time, or else it becomes dogma—frozen,
useless, and even harmful. Religion has historically offered values, but it also imprisoned minds
through fear, superstition, and ritualism. Philosophy encouraged thought but was often too
removed from real life. Science advanced humanity materially but failed to provide purpose or
self-control.
All three—religion, philosophy, and science—have strengths and flaws. Moving forward, we
need the scientific temper: curiosity, courage, doubt, and adaptability. That’s the real path to
growth, understanding, and saving ourselves from self-destruction.
NOTES
🧭 India and Her Past
● India must break from outdated traditions that are no longer useful.
● But she must preserve her core heritage: love for truth, beauty, curiosity, freedom,
diversity, tolerance.
● The “dead wood” of tradition must go, not the “life-giving” elements.
● The goal: rejuvenate, not erase.
🌀 Truth and Its Nature
● Truth = possibly eternal, unchanging — but we can only grasp partial truths.
