Aspirin (ASA)
Action:
-Inhibits normal tendency for platelets to clump together.
-Blocks formation of thromboxin A2
-Improves blood flow through blocked arteries
Indications;
-pain or discomfort of cardiac origin
Contraindications:
-allergic to aspirin

Actions
- bronchodilation

Indications
- anaphylaxis (angioedema - bronchospasms - hypotension
Side effects of epinephrine
- anxiety, elevated BP, elevated heart rate, palpations
Epinephrine Dosage
May directly administer per standing order
Adults: standing order--one time only
- 0.3 mg adults IM
Pediatrics: standing order--one time only
- Patients 15 to 33 kg (33 to 73 lbs) Dose 0.15 mg IM
- Patients >33 kg (73 lbs) Dose 0.3 mg IM
May assist with patient's own medication SO
- any additional doses per BHO
Metered-dose inhalers
Albuterol (proventil, ventolin)
Action: beta 2 stimulant, relaxes smooth muscle in bronchi
, Indications:
- respiratory distress with bronchospasms
- allergic reaction with bronchospasms
Side effects of metered dose inhalers
- tachycardia
- tremors
- dizziness
- palpations
MDI dosage
One or two puffs (ask patient about normal dose)
Order: May assist with 1 dose standing order
- repeat doses by base hospital order
Narcan (Naloxone Hydrochloride)
class: opioid antagonist
actions: reverses opioid overdose by occupying opiate receptor sites
Indications:
-Adults: Symptomatic narcotic OD with respiratory rate less than 12 per minute
-Pediatrics: Symptomatic narcotic OD with respiratory rate low for age
