electrical discharges.
,What is an Artificial Pacemaker?
When heart’s normal pacemaker is unreliable and
causes bradyarrhythmias, it becomes essential to
restore ventricular function. This can be done by
applying an artificial stimulus to heart muscle,
resulting in depolarization.
The artificial pacemaker is a device that provides
this artificial electrical stimulus to myocardial tissue
to induce myocardial depolarization.
, Pacemaker Vocabulary
Pacemakers are programmed to function on DEMAND (synchronous) or
FIXED (asynchronous).
When the pacemaker fires, the ECG shows a SPIKE. When the SPIKE is
followed by a WAVE immediately after we call that CAPTURE.
In DEMAND MODE:
If no intrinsic electrical activity is SENSED, the pacemaker is TRIGGERED
to FIRE. If intrinsic electrical activity is SENSED, the pacemaker is
INHIBITED and it will allow the heart to conduct beats unassisted.
In FIXED MODE:
Pacemaker fires at preset rate regardless of intrinsic electrical activity.
