There are many explanations that come into philosophy
concerning the subject of how to understand one's self.
The philosophy of man really does deal with the subject
of one's self and how one exists in the world. It is all
about the study of truth, real truth. Philos means "love
of", from Greek and sophia means "wisdom". So the
word "Philosophy" comes from "love of wisdom and the
search for truth. " People who sought to discover truth
in ancient times would be called "Philosophers" (like
today). Pythagoras had the name first invented.
According to this account, the nature of a person
consists of many parts within the self—physical,
intellectual, moral, social, political, religious, aesthetic,
sensory, sexual and economic. Because of these
functions the self is the whole human being—but man
as a whole has reason, free thought, and responsibility.
A man who has built the self fully into himself through
philosophy makes a worthy being. Developing a person
is not determined by some distant event or social
situation but by those events and circumstances
surrounding him. In this chapter students will explore
the development of the self from various perspectives
, to provide a generally sufficient explanation of how
different factors affect this process.
It may not be fully possible to explain why we think a
certain way or why we behave the way that we do, but
the overlapping accounts of different events provide a
solid basis for understanding the importance of an
individual 's social identity.
“The Philosophical View of Self”
Socrates: “Know Yourself”
Socrates ponders the essence of being human. He
looks at man from the perspective of his own life. In his
most famous aphorism “know yourself ” the Greek
saying urges one to know one’s self. “A bad person is
not good because of his ignorance, a person who is not
good fails in that he did not recognize it.
The main essence of Socratic ethics is based on virtue
and knowledge. Virtue is what man desires. Knowing
one's own virtue is important and can be learned. Since
virtue is an inner quality of the mind and self-knowledge
