How popular were the Bolsheviks after the February Revolution?
Ans: - In February/March they were a party comprising of 23,000 members and
were very underrepresented with only 40 of the 1500 representatives in the
Soviet being a Bolshevik.
- This was at part due to the fact that all of the major leaders of the Bolshevik
party were in exile however some figures were returning such as Lev Kamenev
and Stalin who arrived in Mid-March and took control over the Bolshevik party
newspaper, Pravda (The Truth).
- They accepted the policy which was adopted by other left-wing socialists which
was to cooperate with the Provisional Government including the continuation of
the war. They were not overly radical before Lenin returned.
Lenin's return
Ans: Lenin returned on the 3rd of April 1917 from Switzerland after being in
exile following the February Revolution which had taken him by surprise. He
rushed preparations to get to Petrograd however it was difficult since his return
would involve going through German territory (it was still the time of the war)
and could end up with Lenin going to a German prison. Instead, the Germans
enabled his return since they saw Bolsheviks who opposed the war would cause
trouble and be beneficial to them. He travelled from Switzerland to
Germany,Sweden (which was neutral), Finland and lastly Petrograd. Lenin
travelled with 31 comrades with Lenin having his own compartment on the sealed
train where he could work but this led to annoyance since the other comrades
would sing, dance and drink in the corridor and other compartments.
