What were the beginnings of true collectivisation like?
Ans: - The 'Great Turn' began in 1928, particularly with the collectivisation of
agriculture.
- It was said that those at fault for the predominant agricultural issues were the
Kulaks since they were the ones supposedly holding back and hoarding the
necessary supplies needed to help agriculture become a collectivised unit.
- Stalin announced his plans for annihilation of 'the Kulaks as a class' or
'deKulakisation' in December 1929.
- The beginnings were incredibly slow with less than 5% of all farms in the USSR
being collectivised by 1929.

Ans: - There was an issuing of new delivery quotas. The peasants who failed to
meet these would be punished.
- Stalin used propaganda in which he would attempt to instigate conflict between
the poorer and better-off farmers.
- The local Party members drove the peasants into collectives. They were
supported by the OGPU and the Red Army whenever necessary.
- Around 4% of all peasant households within the country were comprised Kulaks
but Stalin still believed that they should be 'liquidated as a class'.
- Kulaks were not permitted to join the collectives.
- The OGPU and Red Army were used to identify the kulaks from the rest of the
peasants but it was hard to truly figure out the social standing of the peasants.
- In total, 15% of peasant households were destroyed. 150,000 peasants migrated
North and East to work on poorer land and other Kulaks ended up killing their
livestock and destroying their crops as a way to not be seen as a kulak. This did
much damage and only added to the current rural and agricultural issues in the
USSR.
- Stalin had previously called for collectivisation of 25% of grain-farming areas in
1930 but, by March 1930, 58% of peasant households had been collectivised.
- Stalin went on to say that the local officials were far too rigorous in their
methods and Party members were becoming 'dizzy with success'.
