Creating a Supportive Learning Environment

A. Culturally Responsive Environment

a. Learner Expectations

i. I can establish my expectations for my students by immediately

establishing class rules and procedures. These will be taught on the first

day of school and practiced for the first week or two. After doing so, we

will review these as needed. According to Nevada Teachers of Tomorrow,

there should not be too many class rules with four being their

, recommendation. These rules should be clearly stated, reasonable,

enforceable, and broadly written. Procedures should be what makes up

most of the learner expectations and should be designed to prevent

misbehavior. Students need to know what to do when turning in work,

returning from an absence, transitioning, needing the teacher’s attention

and so much more. In order to establish a culturally responsive classroom

environment, students need to know what to do, to do it, and what the

classroom rules are. It is critical to establish the expectations early on and

to let students know you have high expectations for them as a “teacher[‘s]

expectations affect student performance” (Zerbe, Theories of Classroom

Management). By establishing expectations early on, students feel a sense

of safety where they can ask questions and be themselves. They will know

that I believe them capable of becoming the best versions of themselves

regardless of their background.
