Meninge
The meninges are the protective membranous coverings that surround the brain and
spinal cord. They consist of three distinct layers: the dura mater, arachnoid mater,
and pia mater.{from outwards to inwards}
These layers serve two key functions:
Provide a supportive framework for the cerebral vasculature.
Work alongside cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to cushion the central nervous
system (CNS) and prevent mechanical injury.
DURA MATER
The dura mater is the outermost layer of the meninges and is located directly
underneath the bones of the skull and vertebral column. It is thick, tough, and
inextensible.
Dura means hard. >Outer Endosteal
In the cranial cavity it has 2 layers >Inner Meningeal
Meningeal layer surrounds brain & is continuous with spinal dura mater
The spinal dura extend from foramen magnum to the lower border of 2nd sacral
vertebra {S2}
ENDOSTEAL LAYER/ ENDOCRANIUM
Endocranium is cont.
:with periosteum lining outside of skull or pericranium through
sutures and foramina
: with periosteal lining of orbit through superior orbital fissure
Provides sheaths for cranial nerves.
Its outer surface is fused to inner surface of cranial bones by a no. of
fine fibers fibrous & vascular processes.
It is firmly attached to baseof skull & thus cant be easily stripped
from base .
MENINGEAL LAYER
At places ,meningeal layer of dura mater gets folded upon itself to
from partition which divide cranial cavity into compartments
These folds minimise rotatory displacement of brain.
These are four folds :
