MODULE 1: CONCEPTS IN TESTS & MEASUREMENTS
Why do we care about tests & measurements?
- Helps us gain critical thinking skills
This class talks about:
- How Active Are People?
- How Fit Are People?
- How Skilled Are People?
- Psychological Attributes
Quality of Data Matters
- Tests & measurements is all about sticking to a strict protocol with how we collect
information & getting the best possible data
- So if you put garbage data in… you’ll get garbage data out.
- That’s why gathering quality data is important for results
Who is this class for?
- Doctors
- Researchers
- Teachers
- Personal trainers
- Physical therapists
TEST
- Definition: A written, oral, physiological, psychological, or mechanical instrument or
tool
- EX) class tests on moodle, cognition/executive function tests, surveys, pedometers
- EX) COVID-19 testing.
o We care about how we do this, but in order to have accurate #s we need to
make sure that we are…
▪ Testing for what is meant to be testing
▪ These tests are RELIABLE
▪ Failure of options 1 and 2 means we don’t get actual numbers and have
an uninformed idea of how bad the problem really is.
- What does a test asses?
o Affective
▪ Psychological/emotional outcomes
▪ Taxonomy of Affective Domain (Krathwohl, Bloom, & Masia, 1964)
• Receiving
• Responding
• Valuing
, • Organizing
• Characterizing by a value complex
o Cognitive
▪ Focuses on knowledge/understanding or how executive functions &
other cognitive outcomes work
▪ Taxonomy of Cognitive Domain (Bloom, 1956)
• Knowledge
• Comprehension
• Application analysis
• Synthesis
• Evaluation
o Psychomotor
▪ Focused more on physical outcomes like motor skills, activities, fitness,
etc.
▪ Taxonomy of Psychomotor Domain (Harrow, 1972)
• Reflective movements
• Fundamental movements
• Perceptual abilities
• Physical abilities
• Skilled movements
• Nondiscursive movements
MEASUREMENT
- Definition: the act of assessment
- When we measure something, we are collecting data
- There are 2 types of data:
o Quantitative
▪ “how much”
▪ Numeric Data
▪ Tools and gadgets
▪ Analysis: Statistics
o Qualitative
▪ “how or why something is happening”
▪ Descriptive language
▪ Non-Numeric
▪ Direct Observation (helps us gain an understanding of factors) and
Interview
▪ Analysis: Themes and Description
- 4 core concepts:
o Objectivity (weather multiple assessors measure something in the same way)
o Reliability (refer to results you obtain, NOT the test itself)
▪ Are we getting consistent results at multiple time points?
▪ EX) pedometer results can be valid & reliable, but the tool can’t be
, o Validity (refer to results you obtain, NOT the test itself)
▪ Are we assessing what we mean to assess?
o Relevance (getting the outcome we want that’s relevant to the population)
▪ Most important element in making effective decisions: obtaining relevant
information
EVALUATION
- Definition: Statement of quality, goodness, merit, value, or worthiness about what has
been assessed
- This is
o If we put all of these concepts together, this is the kind of hierarchy we can use
to understand it. Think about how this would work with physical activity or
physical fitness.
▪ Hierarchy (most basic to the highest/most important)
• Test
• Measurement
• Evaluation
