Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general
evaluation of the book - you won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one
unit and the contents, but say as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and
why or why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to
this part. You do not need to refer to the class described for part 2 of this assignment.
300-500 words.
In my opinion the coursebook is a really great book to use for advanced students. It moves from
easier activities to more difficult ones seamlessly. The coursebook is set up in a manner that is easy
to follow for teacher and students. The book uses easily recognisable characters; David Beckham
and James Bond (007).
There are plenty of activities that allow the students to practice and recycle what they have learned.
The vocabulary that is introduced is relevant and useful. The vocabulary would give the students a
better understanding of what globalisation is. The pages of the book are colourful and engaging.
The language and the layout are suitable for higher level students.
The activities in the book cover all four skills that the students need. The book allows the students
to see the relevance and importance of learning English. They can practice what they have learned,
through listening and speaking group activities. There are good guidelines to help students present
their work
There are pronunciation practice activities in all four of the most commonly spoken English
dialects. In my opinion, this may become confusing as all four have different colloquialisms and
idioms. However, it is good that the students are exposed to them all, as they may come across the
different dialects, depending on the situation and who they are speaking to.
There are many freer speaking activities that allow the students to use and recycle what they have
learned. ‘Useful language ‘helps students with these tasks by prompting conversation and using
interesting and relevant sentence starters. Word webs also help students to plan their activities and
presentations.
The one disadvantage that I can see is that there are no formal tests in the unit. This means that the
teacher would have to compile all testing tasks. Tests and assessments at the end of the unit would
help both teacher and student to monitor their progress. I think that the texts in the coursebook are
challenging and would not offend and religion or ethnic group. The text is factual and not
someone’s opinion. Globalisation affects everyone, from all counties, to different degrees. It is a
diverse topic that students should feel comfortable talking about.
