A: Summarize the social context described in the scenario, including the following:


• Maria’s family: The family comprises Maria, her mom, and her dad. Her

parents were arguing a lot due to the move. Maria appears to be the only child, and her

parents are the only family she has.


• Maria’s community: Maria and her parents moved into a small rural town

inhabited predominantly by white middle-class people. In middle school, kids dressed

much differently, making Maria stand out negatively.


• Maria’s cultural background: Maria was biracial as her mom is Hispanic and

her dad is African-American. Maria and her family lived in a big city where the

community was diverse, unlike the small town.

B: Discuss how you, as a teacher, would try to help Maria in a culturally responsive,

trauma-informed way by doing the following:

B1 - Describe a realistic action you would take to help Maria with one or more of

the issues she is facing.

I firmly believe that bullying and discrimination are behaviors or beliefs learned at home,

in the neighborhood, or from someone close to the child. The child exhibited these behaviors that

someone displayed and made it seem okay to do that. That is why I would try to involve the

students’ parents in addressing the bullying and cyber-bullying with all of the students involved.

I would create a lesson on the consequences of bullying and discrimination of any kind. The

bullies need to hear from Maria how they made her feel, and then I would ask each of them to
