1. Before AIR in 1923, the Bombay Radio Club and the Calcutta Radio Club were set up.
2. IBC or Indian Broadcasting commenced experimental activities and on July 23, 1927 : it was

3. Lionel Fieldn was the Controller of Broadcasting in 1935.
4. 8th June 1936 : AIR formed.
5. Indian Broadcasting Service was transformed to AIR in 1936.
6. 1937 : AIR was under the Department of Commerce.
5. 1947 : there were six radio stations - Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow, Tiruchirapalli, Chennai,
Delhi
6. 1956 : Akashvani name was adopted.
7. 1957 : Vividh bharati song was adopted.
8. 2017 : Complete digitalization has been done to DRM (Digital Radio Mondial)
9. 1941 : AIR was under the Department of Information and Broadcasting.
10. AIR reaches 92% of population with 262 radio stations, 23 languages of broadcast where
as ESD targets over seas, NSD targets 56 hours non stop news cover over 90 languages with
647 bulletins.
AIR operates 18 FM stations known as AIR FM rainbow to target the urban society. And AIR FM
Gold was entertainment and news in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. AIR caters socio
economic diverse populace.
11. Right now it reaches 99.19% of Indian population leaving 1% due to cultural barrier or
geographical barrier became one of the largest broadcasting medium.
