Glycolysis and CAC – The complete Oxidation of
Glucose
Food molecules are broken down in 3 stages to
produce ATP:
Digestion: Enzymes break down large polymers
into monomers. Monomers enter cells for
oxidation.
Glycolysis: glucose is partially oxidised into 3
carbon molecule Pyruvate
Pyruvate is oxidised into Acetyl CoA – Transition
from cytosol to mitochondria
Citric Acid Cycle: Complete oxidation of Acetyl
CoA
Glycolysis: 10 small steps, each one catalysed by
a specific enzymes. (when you break things
down in lots of small steps the Gibs free energy
available is released one step at a time hence
there are more occasions for energy to be
stored in carrier molecules).
