Interlude: Oxidation of Pyruvate into Acetyl CoA:
This step is catalysed by a huge enzymatic complex
-> the Pyruvate Dehydrogenase

Acetyl CoA
- CO2 is released a s waste product of this
respiration
- 1 energy rich NADH is gained
- Action moves from the cytosol to the matrix
of the mitochondria
Mitochondria – Revision facts:
Matrix: Hundreds of enzymes, mDNA, ribosomes, site of CAC.
Inner membrane: large surface area, embedded protein complexes (electron transport
chain) impermeable to H+, embedded ATPase.
Outer membrane: more permeable than inner membrane
Intermembrane space (in between outer and inner membrane)
Divide through fusion/fission
Mitochondria placed at strategic places in cell (e.g. in
muscle cells there are myofibrils contractile units of
cardiac cell)
Originate from endosymbiosis events billion years
ago.
