Carnatic Wars
The Carnatic Wars were fought by Britain and France on Indian territory between:
- 1740-48 (First Carnatic War)
- 1748-54 (Second Carnatic War)
- 1758-63 (Third Carnatic War)
French and British were also fighting over Austria. They fought the Seven Years' War and the
Austrian Succession War. The rivalry, which originally began in Europe, shifted to India.
The war was between the French East India Company (FEIC) and the British East India Company
(EEIC). The FEIC attacked several EEIC ships in the Bay of Bengal and destroyed them. The FEIC
stationed over Madras (Chennai), an EEIC-occupied region in Carnatic (modern Tamil Nadu and
Andhra Pradesh) in 1745.
The French general Joseph Dupleix called for help from Mauritius for an invasion of Madras. They
were successful. The Nawab of Carnatic, Anwaruddin, and Muzaffar Khan, supporting the English,
attacked the French-occupied Madras in 1746 and fought the Battle of Adyar. The French won the
battle.
The First Carnatic War ended with the conclusion of the Austrian Succession War after the
Aix-la-Chapelle Treaty in 1748. According to the treaty, Madras was returned to the EEIC, and
France got their ships.
The Second Carnatic War began with the rivalry of Chanda Sahib and Anwaruddin (Muzaffar Khan)
in Carnatic, and Muzaffar Jung and Nasir Jung in Hyderabad (both for succession) in 1748. The
